Information Charter

Introduction

East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service (ESFRS) holds both personal and non-personal information critical to its activities.

It is committed to managing, maintaining, processing and protecting this information in accordance with good practice and relevant legislation (for example, the Freedom of Information and Data Protection Acts), on which its policies and procedures are based.

ESFRS is also committed to being proactive, open and transparent in the dissemination of information, and will routinely publish information unless restricted by legislation or public policy considerations.

This Information Charter sets out the standards you can expect from ESFRS when it requests or holds information, including, but not limited to, personal data about you. It will tell you how you can access this information, including your personal data.

This Charter will be reviewed regularly and updated to take into account of any changes in legislation or ESFRS' policies.

Responsibilities

All ESFRS staff are responsible for complying with the organisation's policies and procedures. Heads of Department and Borough Commanders are responsible for ensuring this compliance.

In addition:

The Assistant Chief Fire Officer is the Senior Information Risk Owner (SIRO) and is responsible, on behalf of the Corporate Management Team, for:

  • Ownership and implementation of this Charter
  • Overall information security in the organisation
  • Dealing with breaches of physical, personal and information security
  • Dealing with complaints about such breaches

The Assistant Chief Officer (Corporate Services) is the organisation's Freedom of Information and Data Protection Officer.

The Head of Information Management is responsible for ensuring that information security policies and procedures are reviewed and implemented.

How ESFRS Manages its Information

ESFRS has security measures in place to safeguard the confidentiality and integrity of its systems and data, and to ensure that information is communicated and available to authorised users in a secure manner.

Access to, and Disclosure of, Information

Personal information

ESFRS knows how important it is to protect the privacy of members of its community and organisation. It will handle all information in a manner which respects the rights of individuals and which complies with the requirements of the Data Protection Act.

Under the Data Protection Act, you can find out if ESFRS holds any personal information about you by making a "subject access request". To request any of your personal information held by ESFRS, please write to the address below.

Information about ESFRS and its Activities

As with all other public sector organisations, ESFRS is subject to the Freedom of Information Act, and is required to make public the information it holds, unless this information is subject to legal or other specific considerations.

To this end, it has developed a Freedom of Information Publication Scheme.
