1. Check your Electric Blanket.
Did you know that 5000 fires are caused by defective electric blankets?
If your blanket or any part of the wiring shows any of these danger signs, you should have it checked or replaced:
- Fraying fabric
- Scorch marks
- Exposed elements
- Creasing or folding
- Soiling
- Damp patches
- Tie tapes damaged or missing
- Worn flex
- Loose connections
- An old BEAB safety mark - a round symbol (the new sign is white capital letters on a black background). This means it is more than 10 years old.

2. Free Electric Blanket Testing.
Make sure your blanket is tested by an expert at least every three years. The following local Councils and organisations have arranged FREE Electric Blanket Testing in East Sussex ..
2.1 Wealden District.
2008 dates to be confirmed
2.1 Bexhill.
Now is the time to get your electric
blanket checked, ready for winter!
The Bexhill Caring Community is again
teaming up with East Sussex Fire & Rescue
Service to carry out free electric blanket
testing and Home Safety Advice.
Two days have been arranged this year,
so just come along with your blanket.
Blanket testing is a fairly quick procedure
which can be done while you wait.
Chris Pascoe, Community Safety Manager
from East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service said:
"We would urge all residents in the Bexhill
district who use electric blankets to take
advantage of this free testing. A faulty
electric blanket can be the cause of house
fires - getting yours tested is a quick
and easy way to keep safe. Testing has
shown a surprisingly high number of used
blankets have faults "

3. Request a Free Home Safety Visit.
In addition to supporting the above Electric Blanket Testing sessions, East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service offer FREE Home Safety Visits.
Home Safety Visits are carried out by East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service personnel to help raise
fire safety standards and reduce the number of deaths and injuries that occur in the home. A visit will involve
checking for any potential fire hazards, giving advice where necessary and fitting a smoke detector if applicable.
Requests can now be made online, and we are particular interested in attending the properties of 'at risk' groups, such as the elderly or single parent families. You can request a visit for yourself
or on behalf of a friend or neighbour by completing our Home Safety Request Form or calling Freephone number 0800 177 7069.
