Arson Reduction Team

The Arson Reduction Team is an initiative to tackle Arson and is supported by East Sussex and Brighton & Hove Crime and Disorder Partnership Forum and the Arson Control Forum. The aim of the Arson Reduction Team is to achieve a 20% reduction in the number of deliberately started fires by March 2010, from the 2001/2002 baseline. Further detail is available on the Arson Reduction Team Pages.

Fire Safety at Home

In 2003/04 there were 791 fires in homes in East Sussex causing 4 deaths and 84 injuries. Most fires in homes start accidentally and can be prevented by following a few basic steps. Remember, you are responsible for fire safety in your home. Find out more on the Fire Safety at Home Page.

Fire Safety at Work

Both Employers and Employees must be aware of the Fire risks posed by the environment in which they work. Employers should make sure that all employees know what to do to prevent a fire in the workplace and how to escape if a fire does break out. More information can be found on our Fire Safety at Work Pages.

East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service provides Fire Safety at Work Training and IOSH Working and Managing Safely Courses, full details are available on our Safety at Work Training Page.

East Sussex Fire Authority has an enforcement role required by the Environment and Safety Information Act 1988 to maintain a Public Register of Notices. Further information on the act can be found on our Fire Safety at Work Pages.

Fire Safety Education at School

The target for the Community Fire Safety Section is to visit every Primary School once every two years to ensure that each child receives fire safety education on three occasions before reaching Secondary School. The visits to Primary Schools are also backed up with an education programme for Secondary Schools and both are described in detail on the Primary and Secondary School Fire Safety Pages.

LIFE Project

The LIFE programme actively works to install a sense of social responsibility. It demonstrates the need for self-discipline, provides a sense of personal opportunity and encourages feelings of self worth. It creates a real understanding that the choices people make will shape their own destiny. See the LIFE Project Pages for more information.

The East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service Strategy for Young People [pdf - 511 KB] provides information on our plans for the next four years.

Mobile Fire Safety Education

ESFRS has a purpose built Fire Safety Vehicle and a towing trailer, Hazard House to help deliver the Fire Safety message across the county. Find out more on our Educational Vehicle Page.

Road Safety

The Fire & Rescue Service are now called to rescue more people from road traffic collisions than from fires. East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service personnel deal with the aftermath of road traffic collisions and the impact they have on human life, on a daily basis. It is only right, therefore, that we direct the appropriate resources towards trying to reduce such incidents.

With this in mind we have published our Road Safety Strategy. The focus of this strategy is to encourage and support partnership working with other agencies involved with road safety and to demonstrate a strategic commitment to this issue.

Another highly successful project is firebike, which aims to promote safety amongst motorcyclists.

Serifon

Serifon - which spells 'No Fires' backwards was first introduced in the form of a play which was written by the Performing Arts department at Lewes Tertiary College. To compliment the work done by the Performing Arts students, the Multimedia HND students at Sussex Downs College have made a series of interactive learning presentations, click here for details.
