Human RightsEquality & Diversity

Human rights refers to the "basic rights and freedoms to which all humans are entitled".

Examples of rights and freedoms which have come to be commonly thought of as human rights include civil and political rights, such as the right to life and liberty, freedom of expression, and equality before the law; and social, cultural and economic rights, including the right to participate in culture, the right to food, the right to work and the right to education.

"All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood."

The list of our rights as set out in the Human Rights Act, 1998 is:

  • The right to life
  • Freedom from torture and degraded treatment
  • Freedom from slavery and forced labour
  • The right to liberty
  • The right to a fair trial
  • The right not to be punished for something that wasn't a crime when you did it
  • The right to respect for private and family life
  • Freedom of thought, conscience and religion
  • Freedom of expression
  • Freedom of assembly and association
  • The right to marry or form a civil partnership and start a family
  • The right not to be discriminated against in respect of these rights and freedoms
  • The right to own property
  • The right to an education
  • The right to participate in free elections and cultural life
  • The right to a nationality.
