Shrove Tuesday

Traditionally Shrove Tuesday marks the beginning of Lent, when many people throughout the country make pancakes. Remember to keep fire safety at the forefront of your mind when cooking your pancakes and sprinkling them with delicious lemon and sugar!

Fat and chip pan fires can be absolutely devastating. Remember to keep your family and friends safe, as well as well fed!

To reduce the risk of death or injury, East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service suggests the following safety advice:

  • Never leave the pan unattended when the heat is switched on
  • Never put the food in the pan if the oil begins to give off smoke
  • Do NOT move the pan if it is on fire!
  • If the pan catches fire, only turn off the heat if it safe to do so
  • Get Out, Call the Fire Brigade, Stay Out!

A working smoke alarm saves lives and will greatly increase your chances of escaping unharmed if fire breaks out in your home. Have an escape route planned and make sure everyone in the house knows about it.

Stay alive, stay safe, make sure your smoke alarm works properly:

  • Test the battery every week
  • Change the battery every year (unless it's a 10 year alarm)
