East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service firefighter, Mick Phillips' funeral was held on Wednesday 12th March 2008. Firefighters from East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service took part in a funeral parade through Preston Circus fire station, which began at 10.30am. Mick Phillips died of cancer on 28th February 2008, after serving over 26 years with East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service.
The funeral parade continued through Preston Circus community fire station, through the streets of Brighton and onto the South Chapel of the Woodvale Crematorium, Brighton. Mick Phillips joined East Sussex Fire & Rescue as a new recruit in May 1979. He served at Roedean community fire station, then Hove community fire station and after receiving his long service medal in 1999; he was promoted to Lead Firefighter at Preston Circus Community fire station. Mick was actively involved in many different aspects within East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service and enjoyed competing in volleyball, football and other sporting events. Throughout his career he made many friends and left many lasting memories. At the end of 2005, Mick Phillips was diagnosed with cancer, which subsequently led to his retirement on the 10th November 2005. He had excellent support from the Royal Sussex County Hospital and Martletts Hospice in Hove and from his family and friends. Mick will be greatly missed by his family, friends and colleagues. |
