Awards Ceremony 2008

Uniformed and support staff from East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service received appropriate recognition for long and meritorious service, at the annual Awards Ceremony, which was held at the Service Headquarters in Eastbourne on 4th April 2008.

The Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex, Mrs. Phyllida Stewart-Roberts OBE, presented the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal to operational staff. The recipients were both full-time and retained firefighters who have served for twenty years and whose character and conduct have been exceptional.

The East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service Medals were presented by the Chief Fire Officer and Chief Executive, Des Prichard. The medal was introduced in May 2001 and is presented for loyal and good service. Support Staff must have completed twenty years and thirty years service for Uniformed Staff.

This year’s ceremony included the Chief Fire Officer & Chief Executive Certificate of Congratulations for the first time. Staff awarded this will have dealt with arduous situations above and beyond their normal duties where life is at risk. This was awarded to personnel serving at Preston Circus Community Fire Station, Brighton, who saved the life of a man who had climbed to the top of the highest ride on Brighton Pier.

Another award that was given for the first time was the East Sussex Fire Authority Excellence Award. This was presented by the Chair of the Fire Authority, Cllr. Michael Murphy and is for humanitarian, charitable or extra curricular service of an exceptional nature, which is innovative and promotes public service. The recipients were Firefighters who had worked with our long-term partner, the Children’s Fire and Burn Trust, and had help plan, raise funds and then supervise an exciting weekend on the Isle of Wight for children with serious burns and injuries. The LIFE (Local Intervention Fire Education) Project, designed to improve the lives of disaffected youngsters through a week’s intensive course run at various Community Fire Stations, also received this award.
