The launch of the Volvo FLL-15 Euro 5, fire appliance took place at Brighton & Hove Pavilion on Thursday 20th March 2008. The event was attended by local dignitaries, which included the Chairman of the Fire Authority, Councillor Mike Murphy, the Vice Lord Lieutenant, Peter Field and the Mayor of Brighton & Hove, Councillor Carol Theobald.

The Volvo FLL-15, Euro 5 fire appliance replaces the Volvo FL6 model and there are three key differences. It has a low-level 15-ton chassis, a one-piece Volvo factory-made cab and it is fitted with a new 7ltr 280 BHP diesel engine that is compliant with Euro 5 legislation.

Euro 5 is effectively an emission control standard to which all manufacturers must comply. As this piece of European legislation does not come into force until September 2009, East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service are leading the way in demonstrating their commitment to environmental protection by early introduction.

The Chairman of East Sussex Fire Authority, Councillor Mike Murphy, said,

" East Sussex Fire Authority is committed to ensuring that we are actively promoting sustainable environments within the City and the County and we are utilising public money in the most effective way possible. The new Volvo FLL-15, Euro 5 fire appliances are an excellent example of how we can deliver an efficient, life-saving service to our communities at the best possible cost to the taxpayer, and at the same time ensure that we have a minimal adverse effect on the environment."

The Chief Fire Officer and Chief Executive of East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service, Des Prichard, placed on record his sincere thanks to all East Sussex Fire & Rescue staff involved in the vehicle replacement project and said,

" Everyone has demonstrated tremendous dedication and on-going commitment in ensuring effective delivery and robust training in all operational aspects of the new Volvo FLL-15, Euro 5 fire appliances."

East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service carries out a considerable amount of prevention and safety initiatives within the communities of East Sussex and the City of Brighton & Hove and has subsequently achieved a significant effect on reducing the amount of life threatening incidents that occur.

The Chief Fire Officer & Chief Executive, Des Prichard went on to add that despite this, there will always be a need for effective, decisive, intervention. He said,

" These state-of-the-art fire appliances will ensure that our trained fire-fighters achieve the best possible response times and are able to arrive safely at road traffic collisions, fires and other emergencies to effectively save lives. Fire fighters responding to operational incidents require the best possible equipment to enable them to respond to the individual needs of members of the public involved in the emergency situation. There is no doubt in my mind, that the new Volvo FLL-15, Euro 5 fire appliance will help to ensure efficient delivery of services to the communities of East Sussex and the City of Brighton & Hove.

" The new Volvo, FLL-15, Euro 5 fire appliance also ensures that there is no additional adverse effect on the environment and we are therefore able to underline our ongoing commitment to East Sussex Fire Authority's policies on the Environment Agenda."
