Rye Post office

20 January 2009

On Friday 16th January 2009, Fire Safety Inspecting Officers from East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service carried out an inspection of Rye Post Office. As a result, a number of serious fire safety concerns were identified and raised.

Staff at Rye Post Office were given the opportunity to resolve the issues and to improve fire safety arrangements to an acceptable level but were unable to do so within a reasonable period of time.

So serious were the conditions that the Fire Authority were left with no option but to serve a notice that prohibits the use of the premises until fire safety arrangements are at an acceptable standard.

Richard Fowler, Fire Safety Manager, East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service, commented:

"With the loss of a key community resource, the Fire Authority is aware of the impact that this closure will have on local residents. Fire Safety Officers are currently working with the staff at Rye Post Office to ensure that the necessary improvements are made and that the premises can re-open as soon as possible.

Prohibition notices are only used in the most serious of cases when all other options have been explored."
