Help Us to 'Crackdown' on Road Safety 23 January 2009 Operation Crackdown is a road safety project supported by the Sussex Safer Roads Partnership, of which East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service are members. The aim of the project is to make the roads of Sussex a safer place for all. Operation Crackdown, which is operated by Sussex Police, provides a means by which anybody can report incidents of anti-social driving or abandoned cars. All reports are recorded and the data correlated to track, identify and target potential risks. While the information might not be used as hard evidence, it may be used to support prosecutions. All too often East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service is called to deal with the aftermath of anti-social driver behaviour such as the use of mobile phones and driving under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol. This behaviour is not only extremely dangerous, but also affects the quality of life in local neighbourhoods. Similarly, the Service is frequently alerted to abandoned cars, which present easy targets for thieves, vandals and arsonists. As well as supporting this initiative in the community, East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service is promoting Operation Crackdown to it's own employees by encouraging them to participate and to remain vigilant. This further supports a new process whereby Service personnel are provided with the opportunity to identify their own concerns about safety on the roads, such as improved signage, poor visibility and highway maintenance, which are then passed to Traffic Management Officers for consideration. It only takes a few minutes to report an incident and you can do so by visiting www.operationcrackdown.org or by calling Operation Crackdown on 01243 642222. |
