Child Car Safety Advice Session at Meeching Valley Primary School, Newhaven
19 March 2009
On Friday 20th March, representatives from East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service and Newhaven's Halfords store will be on hand at Meeching Valley Primary School in Newhaven to talk to parents about car safety.
Parents will be offered the opportunity to discuss the correct use of children's car seats and safety belts. Staff from Newhaven's Halfords store will be checking that car seats are correctly fitted. The firefighters from Newhaven will be giving goodie bags to the children, which will include important safety information and some freebies!
Current law states that children up to 135cm in height must use the appropriate restraint when travelling in any car, van or goods vehicle. A child must then use an adult belt when they reach this height or the age of 12 (whichever is reached first). The driver is responsible for ensuring that these regulations are adhered to.
In a crash at just 30mph, an unrestrained person will hit any object or person in front of them with a force of between 30 and 60 times their own body weight. A seatbelt ramp will be on site for parents to experience the surprising impact that an even smaller collision has on the body.
The event will be taking place between 2:30-3:30pm at Meeching Valley School on Friday 20th March 2009.
