Joining together for safer communities
22 June 2009
Fire does not discriminate; it strikes at anyone at any time.
There are, however, simple things that we can all do to reduce the risk. Whilst the Neighbourhood Watch scheme is primarily about crime prevention, there has been a move to a multi-agency approach to create safer communities. This has come about following the passing of the Crime and Disorder Act.
Effectively this means agencies such as Police, Local Authorities, the Fire and Rescue Service, and more importantly, local people, working together to greater effect.
Annually, fire loss figures are in excess of £1 billion. This only takes into account insured loss and fire strikes at some of the most vulnerable in society who quite often are not insured. Also, if you calculate the loss of life from fire and the cost to the National Health Service of tending to the injured, the real cost, aside from the tragic human suffering, is enormous.
East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service are working with National Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinators in giving advice and literature on how to improve fire safety in the home.
