The Christmas period has begun and although, traditionally, it's a time of celebrations and joy, the festive season also brings with it a wide range of fire hazards to the home. With lots of extra guests, extra cooking, candles and decorations along with people smoking and drinking, all of the everyday fire risks are considerably increased. Don't let fire safety stop you enjoying yourself, instead know the risks and plan ahead. To ensure you have a safe and Happy Christmas, East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service offers the following advice:
- Make sure you have a working smoke alarm - test the battery once a week.
- If you have an electric blanket, do not use it if the fabric is worn or frayed, if there are scorch marks or if the flex is worn or damaged. If in doubt, don't use it.
- If you have an open fire, make sure your flue is inspected regularly, a professional cleans it and that the fireplace has a suitable fireguard.
- Take care with all portable heaters. Never place them close to furniture, bedding, curtains, etc. and never dry clothing over a heater.
- Check that your vehicle has been well maintained and serviced, and make sure you have a screen scraper and de-icer.
- When driving in cold and icy conditions take care on both treated and untreated roads.
- Don't drink and drive.
- Never use lighted candles as Christmas tree decorations
- Check your Christmas tree lights conform to the British Standard. Test them before putting them on to your tree and replace sets of old lights.
- As Christmas decorations are often made of combustible materials, never attach them to lights or heaters or place garlands immediately above or around fireplaces.
- If you have people staying with you over the festive period, let your guests know where to find door and window keys, make sure they know how they can get out of the house and keep exists clear.
- During any party make sure cigarettes are completely extinguished and never empty ashtrays into waste bins.
