Cooking safely this christmas |

The kitchen can be the most dangerous place in your home, with two thirds of all fires starting in this area. East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service are offering some advice to make sure that you stay safe while cooking and that you know what to do if a fire breaks out in your home. If you are deep fat frying, never fill the pan more than one third full of oil. The extremely high temperature of the oil can create ideal conditions for fire. It is important to make sure that all clothing and tea towels are kept well away from the cooker, as well as making sure that electrical cables are also kept clear of the cooker and water. Never leave cooking unattended, if you need to leave the room remove the pan from the heat, or turn it off, allowing it to cool completely. If a pan catches fire, don't take risks, get yourself and everyone out of your home and contact the Fire and Rescue Service. Never attempt to move the pan or throw water over it. Never use a fire extinguisher on a pan that is filled with oil, this could cause the fire to grow and spread. Make sure that you and your family stay safe by following East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service simple fire safety guidelines this Christmas. |
