Residential Accommodation

Following a number of recent residential fires, local firefighters are urging tenants and landlords to stay safe over the forthcoming festive period.

Mark Webb, Station Commander at Hastings Fire Station said, "It is vital that both residents and landlords ensure that their premises are safe during the Christmas period. Working smoke alarms are proven to save lives and they should be fitted in all residential accomodation. The communal areas of all buildings should also be fitted with fire detection equipment to give residents warning of a fire that is affecting their escape routes."

The Christmas period is potentially more hazardous due to increased decorative lighting and the potential over-loading of electric sockets. In addition, communal areas such as stairways and hallways can get filled with discarded boxes and other waste, which not only creates an extra fire hazard but also leaves the main escape route blocked.

Mark Webb continued; "All residents should make a fire-plan to ensure that they can escape safely in the event of a fire. Everyone should also make sure they have working smoke alarms in their accomodation. I would urge all residents and landlords to be vigilant and ensure that this Christmas is enjoyed safely by everyone."
