East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service is tackling a major fire on Hastings Pier in the early hours of this morning (Tuesday October 5th).

An initial call reporting a fire on the pier was received from a member of the public at 1.01am and a fire engine was at the scene within five minutes. At the time of writing (4.15am) a total of eight fire engines, a water bowser and two aerial ladder platforms are busy dealing with the blaze. The ESFRS Maritime Unit, two RNLI lifeboats and the Sussex Police helicopter are also in attendance.

The whole of the ballroom is alight and it is likely to be some time before the fire is fully under control. There are no reports of any injuries and the cause of the fire at this stage is unknown.

Robertson Street, Warrior Square and White Rock Road are all closed. The roads are likely to remain closed for some time so drivers are advised to plan alternative routes, avoiding the area around the pier.

A further update will be available on the ESFRS website later this morning as soon as further information is available.
