Electrical fire safety25 January 2012

A fire occurred in the electrical intake of a property, at 03.30am on 25th January. An elderly female resident was alerted to the fire by a smoke alarm, which had been fitted by East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service. The lady was then able to sound her Lifeline alarm.

One fire engine from Hailsham and one fire engine from Herstmonceux were immediately dispatched to the property in Sussex Avenue, Hailsham.

Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the property and led the female resident to safety. The fire was extinguished using a CO2 extinguisher and crews requested the attendance of UK Power Network.

The incident is a timely reminder of the dangers of electrical fires. Electrical Fire Safety Week runs from 23rd to 29th January and is a national campaign warning people of the dangers of electrical faults and the misuse of electrical appliances.

Mark Hobbs, Protection, Legislation, and Enforcement Officer, East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service said:

"This incident is another example of an electrical intake fire and because of this danger, one of the initiatives of Electrical Fire Safety Week that we are currently promoting is the fitting of warning labels at the electrical intake position of the property advising people not to store combustible items in close proximity."
