East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service are holding a poster competition asking local children up to the age of 12 years of age to design a poster based on water safety and visually illustrate what water safety means to them!

The message is ‘Be Water Aware’ and the poster could be aimed at people undertaking activities which are often perceived as low risk near water. For example almost double the amount of people drown whilst fishing compared to sailing. In fact, the types of people who are most at risk of drowning are people who happen to just be running or walking near the water. Nearly half of people who drowned in 2015 had no intention of going into the water.

You may also want to look at our website for other ideas, which could include the importance of understanding beach flags, the devastating effect of cold water shock on the body or the unexpected power of the water.

The winning design will be used by East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service in a range of promotional material, such as posters and pop-up banners to promote water safety campaigns and encourage people to be more aware of the dangers of water.

Local schools will be involved in the poster competition but anyone up to the age of 12 can enter and we would love for as many children as possible to get involved. Prizes will include swim bags full of goodies and a family swim-pass!

We would like the poster to include the hash tag: #BEWATERAWARE and could include safety advice such as:

 Spot – Spot the dangers

Advice – Take advice and follow safety signs and advice

Friend – Go with a friend or stay close to a friend or family member

Emergency – Shout for help and call 999 or 112

 How to take part:

Pictures should be drawn on one side of an A4 sized piece of paper and the design should fill as much of the page as possible. The child’s name, age, school and contact details should be on the back of the poster.

The deadline for entries is midday Friday 21st April. Unfortunately we are not going to be able to return any of the pictures. Entries should be posted to:
