Stay Local

We would like you to “Stay Local” this bonfire season, supporting locally organised events rather than setting off fireworks or having bonfires in your own gardens

However we also recognise that the current uncertainty around Covid 19 means many local events are disrupted, going online or being cancelled completely.

Remember the Fireworks Code

A special request about Lewes bonfire night

A number of bonfire societies have already announced they are not planning to hold their usual celebrations this year at Lewes bonfire (5 November). The evening is considered as an event for locals and there will be less to see this year so we are joining other organisations in asking you not to attend from outside the area.

In previous years it has been overcrowded and uncomfortable, with very few public facilities available.

  • South East Coast Ambulance Service and St John Ambulance treat dozens of people every year.
  • There is also no guarantee that you will be able to get to and from the town as there could be road closures in place or changes to train services.
  • Sussex Police make a number of arrests.
