Get your car Winter Ready

Make sure your car is able to cope with whatever the weather throws at you.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service is asking drivers to make sure their car is able to cope with whatever the weather throws at us.

The call comes are part of the Service’s ongoing Winter Ready safety campaign.

David Kemp, Community Safety manager, said:

“If your car breaks down you are usually safer waiting well away from your vehicle but in wintery weather that can be very unpleasant. Making sure your car is in good condition before you set off can reduce the chances of having a problem in the first place. You can also be prepared by getting together a car emergency kit.”

Car maintenance at home

The Service is also highlighting the risks of carrying out car maintenance at home – particularly working under a car or other vehicle.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents says it is better not to work under a vehicle if at all possible, however if you have to do this then the following precautions should be considered:

  • Always use the correct equipment eg quality axle stands
  • NEVER work beneath a vehicle which is supported only on jacks.
  • Use axle stands on a hard, level surface such as concrete.
  • Securely chock the wheels remaining on the ground.
  • Make sure that each axle stand is securely located under a strong point on the vehicle. Consult the vehicle manufacturers handbook.
  • Check and don’t exceed the capacity of the stand.
