We are proud to announce that four new East Sussex Fire & Rescue trainee firefighters have successfully completed their Wholetime Trainee Firefighter Course and officially ‘passed out’.

Tri-service course

The recruits took part in the inaugural collaborative training programme which saw three fire services join forces for the first time to run a joint training course for full-time firefighters.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue, West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service and Surrey Fire & Rescue Service collaborated in running the course which started in January.

Twenty-four recruits took part in a 13 week course to become Wholetime community firefighters. Of the 24 recruits, 12 are from Surrey, eight are from West Sussex, and four are from East Sussex.

The four new East Sussex Fire and Rescue trainee firefighters are:

  • ·FF Emily Hobbs
  • ·FF Adam Lawson
  • ·FF Jody Aldridge
  • ·FF Sam Baker

The newly-qualified firefighters performed fire and rescue drills at a passing out ceremony held at Surrey’s Training Centre in Reigate on 11th April.  The ceremony was attended by their family, friends and dignitaries, including the Chief Fire Officer of East Sussex.

The trainees now enter the development phase of their careers. They will take up their roles on stations with their new watches.

Commitment and teamwork

Chief Fire Officer, Dawn Whittaker, said: “Today is a hugely exciting day as it is the first time Surrey Fire and Rescue, West Sussex Fire and Rescue and East Sussex Fire and Rescue have delivered a joint thirteen week in-house Wholetime core training programme.  I am so proud of all the staff and instructors that have made this possible.

We have high hopes for our new recruits and we have already been impressed by their commitment and teamwork, since they began their basic training in January. They will now join their assigned teams and fire stations and start to experience the role for real and I know they will receive a warm welcome."
