Overnight round-up 15 February

  • At 19.18 yesterday (14 February) Eastbourne firefighters were sent to a chimney fire in Rattle Road, Eastbourne, where they used a chimney kit to put out the fire.
  • At 20:29 yesterday (14 February) two crews were sent to a St Helens Rd, in Hastings, following reports of a fire in the undergrowth. A bucket of water was used to extinguish the fire.
  • At 21.32 yesterday (14 February) a crew were mobilised to Braycastle Walk, Hastings, where they put out a bin fire using buckets of water.

Residents can take precautions to prevent a chimney fire in the home including making sure your chimney is swept regularly and according to the type of fuel used. Storing waste – advice for businesses

Businesses are being reminded not to leave combustible materials close to premises, which can become a fire hazard as flames can quickly spread to nearby buildings placing others at risk.

Businesses should consider this risk, within their fire risk assessment, which should address the risk of a fire on their premises affecting others in the vicinity - especially where this affects others ability to escape. Have a look at our Business Safety pages.

Road Traffic Collisions

  • At 21.50 yesterday (14 February) two crews were sent to Eastern Rd, Brighton, where they made a scene safe following a road traffic collision involving one car and one van.

False Alarms

Businesses and property owners are being urged to take action to help prevent false alarm call-outs, following a number of these types of incidents overnight.

East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service were sent to false alarms in Eastbourne, Ringmer, St Leonards-on-Sea, Uckfield and Hove overnight (February 14).

Taking these actions could help reduce unnecessary call-outs

  • Remember, fire alarm systems are there to alert occupants to the fact that there may be a fire and depending on your fire risk assessment and emergency plans, it is normally appropriate to investigate first and only to call the Fire Service if / when there are any signs to indicate that there is actually a fire.  
  • If you have an automatic alarm system, make sure it is installed properly, that you know how it works and it is serviced regularly by a competent person. The British Standards Institute's BS 5839 has recommendations for the planning, design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of these systems. If these are followed, a false alarm issue is unlikely to occur.   
  • Best practice requires that false alarms are logged and investigated so that any patterns and trends are identified and dealt with.
  • Be aware that things like steam and dust can trigger alarms and take precautions when possible.
  • Ensure staff and/or residents know what to do when the alarm goes off.
