East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service wishes to remind residents the importance of registering their fridges, washing machines, or dishwashers, this Product Safety Week (21–25 October 2019).

It’s quick and easy to ensure that you are the first to know about a rare case of a safety notice or product recall by spending just a few minutes on registermyappliance.org.uk

Did you know?

  •  … that more than half of accidental fires start in the kitchen?  Kitchen fires accounted for 297 of the 508 accidental household fires to which East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service responded last year.
  • Electrical fires are more common than people think. Last year, East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service responded to 125 electrical fires in the home.
  • Last year, kitchen appliances accounted for 25 accidental kitchen fires locally. Remember, don’t leave washing machines or dishwashers running when you leave the house. If there is a fire, you want to be able to alert the Fire Service!
  • Smoke alarms really do save lives! Of the 508 accidental dwelling fires that East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service dealt with last year, 77 of the homes did not have a smoke alarm fitted. Install one on every floor and test them every week.

Registermyappliance.org.uk, is a portal run by The Association of Manufacturers of Domestic Appliances2 (AMDEA), to make it quicker and easier for the public to register both new and older appliances, and to improve ownership data.

Two thirds (67%) of people have never registered an older appliance whether bought a couple of years before, that they found in their home when the moved in, or were by given by family or friends, or bought second hand, according to research commissioned by AMDEA. 3

Although anyone thinking of acquiring an older appliance should first check that they are not already subject to a recall on the Government recall listing

ESFRS is using #ReactToRecalls as an opportunity to urge UK householders to always be prepared for recalls, however infrequently they occur, by following Safety Matters for Appliance Owners.
