East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service is highlighting how an app can help emergency services get to the right place.
The what3words app helps pinpoint everyone’s exact location and downloading it can help speed up our response especially if people don’t know where they are or its difficult to describe.
Callers are able to give their 3 word address and these three words can then be used to identify the precise location and direct resource to exactly where it is required.
It is particularly helpful in large open areas such as the Ashdown Forest or the South Downs.
In September, Hove firefighters assisted with a fire in the open on Devils Dyke Road, Poynings. The caller used the app which pinpointed the location.
what3words is a really simple way to talk about location. what3words have assigned each 3m square in the world a unique 3 word address that will never change.
People can use the what3words application to find their tents at festivals, navigate to B&Bs and vitally, direct emergency services to the right place.
Chris Sheldrick, co-founder and CEO of what3words, adds, ‘Being in need of urgent help and not being able to easily describe where you are can be very distressing for the person involved and a really difficult situation for emergency services. Today people nearly always have their phone on them. We need to use the tools at our disposal to improve public services and potentially save lives.”
