East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service is aware that there have recently been a number of reports of fire risks associated with the use of alcohol-based hand sanitiser.
These products are supplied with safety information which should always be followed, in particular the products should not be used in close proximity to naked flames, or very hot surfaces.
Alcohol is a flammable liquid at normal room temperature where it will generate flammable vapours, therefore if in contact with a competent ignition source will ignite and burn. Furthermore, alcohol/ethanol burns with an almost invisible flame at very high temperatures.
The likelihood of these products causing fires through self-ignition is considered very low, as the auto-ignition temperature for these products is in excess of 3500C.
