We’re Ready, Willing and Able during COVID-19

Date : 11 November 2020

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service is reminding the public that it is “Ready Willing and Able” to serve the community during the second national lockdown. The service will continue to respond to 999 calls, as well as help prevent emergencies happening in the first place through its community safety engagement work with businesses and individuals.

Staff and community volunteers are checking in on those who may be feeling isolated or alone during COVID-19. Please feel free to call The COVID-19 emergency phone number on 01323 462299 or email covidvolunteeringsussex@esfrs.org

David Kemp, Head of Community Safety said: “We know that this second lockdown will have a different impact from the first and we are here to help. We can offer advice about fire safety in the home, as well as highlighting some of the scams which are going around. We want to stress that we will never ask for any information about bank accounts or ask for donations.”

Virtual home safety visits

To reduce the risk to you and our staff, we can now carry out special virtual "visits" over the phone where we can talk to you about the fire risk in your home, after which we may:

  • Post you further information leaflets AND/OR post you smoke alarms to fit yourself OR
  • If the risk of fire is high and no one in your home is able to fit a smoke alarm, we will take protective precautions and fit a smoke alarm for you in your home.

Please feel free to contact us on behalf of a friend or relative, but we would just ask that you get their permission first and let them know that we will ask them a number of questions.

If you would like to find out more about a Home Safety Visit, you can either call us on 0800 177 7069 or complete and return a Home Safety Visit request form which can be downloaded from our website at https://www.esfrs.org/your-safety/home-safety-visits/ and send it to Homefire.Safetyvisits@esfrs.org.

A member of our Community Safety Team will then be in contact to arrange a suitable time for a telephone chat. They will ask a few simple questions regarding your property and the occupants. This will then help us determine how we will assist.

Business safety

Our officers are continuing to carry out the service’s statutory and regulatory duties during the second national lockdown to ensure public safety and compliance with legislation is maintained. In addition, our operational staff will continue to support smaller businesses within the community of East Sussex, Brighton & Hove.

If you have any concerns about fire safety in the premises you occupy as a business or domestic dwelling, you can contact our Business Safety teams by visiting https://www.esfrs.org/business-safety/ where you can also find information and advice relating to fire safety legislation.
