Electrical fire safety warning after fire in Seaford

Date : 17 February 2021

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service is calling on people to take simple electrical safety measures to prevent fires in their homes.

On 15th February at 16:01, we were called to attend a fire in a residential property on Walmer Road in Seaford.

Firefighters from Seaford, Newhaven and Eastbourne attended and crews used two breathing apparatus, one hose reel and one jet hose to extinguish the fire.

A fire investigation concluded that the fire was caused by a lamp being left on and placed too close to flammable materials.

Electrical safety tips

  • Electrical items such as lamps should be kept away from furniture and fittings. Make sure that nothing can fall on top of them.

  • Don’t leave flammable articles such as table cloths and tea towels on or near electrical items

  • We recommend that you do not leave electrical items on when you are not in the house, or you are asleep

  • Try to keep electrical items secured to stop them falling over

  • Check your electrics – look out for signs of wear and tear, turn off appliances when not in use and register them at www.registermyappliance.org.uk/

Home Safety tips

  • Smoke alarms – protect your home with working smoke alarms – install them on every level of your home and test them every week

  • You’re more at risk from fire when you’re asleep so bring in a night-time routine – close doors to stop fire spreading,  check your cooker and other appliances are off, and keep door and window keys where you can easily find them.

  • Plan a safe escape to make sure that you know how to leave your home quickly and safely in an emergency
