Fake or illegal cigarettes pose an even bigger fire risk than genuine ones, which are already the single biggest cause of fire deaths in the UK, accounting for one in three house-fire fatalities.

Illegal cigarettes are not manufactured with the same strict controls in place, such as ‘reduced ignition propensity’, which means that they are even more likely to cause house fires as they will not self-extinguish when not puffed by the smoker.

Sadly there are an estimated 1,000 deaths linked to smoking in East Sussex every year. It is estimated that around one in four smokers smoke illegal tobacco in East Sussex, but remember that all tobacco products, whether fake or not, are full of dangerous carcinogens.

“During times of financial difficulties, it can be tempting to buy cheaper cigarettes, but we urge people to put the safety of themselves and their families’ first.”said David Kemp, Strategic Community Safety Manager. “Not only are these tobacco products dangerous for health, and increase fire risks, but the purchase of these goods could be funding other criminal activity.”

Signs to look out for when buying cigarettes include:

  • Cheaper prices
  • Packaging: Spelling mistakes, incorrect logos or typefaces, foreign health warnings, no picture health warnings. The packet colours are also often different to legal cigarette packets, which are normally a brown or grey colour.
  • Taste: Unusual taste and smell
