We may be in a heatwave but East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service is ready to help you keep warm safely this winter!

It’s announced dates for electric blanket testing.

David Kemp, head of Community Safety at the Service said:

“We know it’s probably the last thing on people’s minds at the moment, but we want people to pop these dates in their diaries. We’re expecting to be busy as people look to find new ways to keep warm safely.”

He added:

“We recommend that you always buy new and from a reliable source when choosing an electric blanket - secondhand blankets may not be safe and you can't be sure they meet current safety requirements. Even though you think you may be saving money, we can assure you that even a small fire can be very costly and it’s not worth the risk.”

Check your blanket regularly for signs of wear or damage

  • Are there any scorch marks or discoloured areas on the fabric of the blanket?
  • Are wires visible or poking through the fabric?
  • Is the fabric is frayed or worn?
  • Is there any damage to the power cable between the plug and the blanket's control or between the control and the blanket?
  • Does the control make a buzzing sound when switched on or gives off a scorching smell?
  • Is the blanket's connector - where the electrical cable plugs into the blanket - damaged or over-heating?
