East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service was called at 18.00 on 25 Jan 2022 to reports of smoke and flames coming from a manhole cover on Kings Road, Brighton.
As of 19.45 two fire engines are at the scene along with power/utilities staff.
A 30 metre cordon is in place and nearby buildings have been evacuated as a precaution.
Members of the public are being asked to avoid the area.
There are no reports of any injuries.
