Advice following house fire in Hastings

We were called on 28 September at 00.22am to a house fire in Greville Road, Hastings.

Firefighters from Hastings the Ridge and Bohemia Road were in attendance.

The family of the house were awoken just after midnight by a smoke detector sounding.  They quickly vacated the property and called the fire service.

The Ridge, who were first in attendance, found a quickly developing fire in the lounge and dining room.

Crews used two breathing apparatus and one hose reel jet to extinguish the fire.

The cause of the fire was believed to be a tumble drier in the dining area.

Photos showed the importance of closing doors at night.

Watch Manager Dave Sullivan said: ‘’There was severe smoke damage to the lounge-dining room. The hallway was relatively untouched due to the inside door being closed. We’d like to remind members of the public of the steps you can take to protect yourselves and your family. The closed door and working smoke alarm allowed the family to escape safely.’’

  • Make sure items are turned off at night such as the cooker and electrical appliances.
  • Put candles and cigarettes out properly, ensuring there are no embers still burning.
  • Exits should be kept clear and you should close inside doors at night to stop a fire from spreading.
