Cooking safety reminder after Brighton incident

East Sussex Fire and Rescue were called out today (6 December 2024) at 1.15pm to reports of an alarm sounding and the smell of smoke coming from a flat on Palmeira Avenue, Brighton and Hove.

Crews used ladders to get to a first floor flat where a pan had accidentally been left on a hob.

They cleared smoke from the property using a fan.

There were no reports of injuries.

Cooking advice

Cooking is one of the most common causes of fires in the home - the good news is that incidents can easily be prevented.

  • Stay focused when you're cooking.
  • If you need to leave the stove, turn off the heat or move the pans away.
  • Be careful with loose clothes because they can catch fire.
  • Don't cook if you've had alcohol or medicine that makes you sleepy.
