Progress at Fort Road, Newhaven

Date

We’re thrilled to share an exciting update on the transformation taking place at Fort Road.

We moved to our new Newhaven Community Fire Station in 2016 and the old Fort Road building has been used for a range of purposes since then.

Planning permission was granted to re-purpose the redundant Fire Station in Fort Road, Newhaven to a new central Engineering Workshop. Creating a hub for the ESFRS Engineering team across the country, plus offering resilience to the Blue Light partners.

You can find out more about the project here Fort Road Newhaven | East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service.

Significant investment and hard work are powering ahead to deliver a modern and efficient new Engineering Workshop and upgraded office space, with the project on track for completion in March 2026.

What’s Happening Onsite?

Since works began in January 2025, both the existing premises and the new workshop have seen excellent progress:

Existing Premises

  • Mechanical plant is now being installed across the ground floor and first-floor offices.
  • Mechanical and Electrical (M&E) services containment is nearing completion, with final sections now in place.

Engineering Workshop

  • Ground beam works are complete.
  • The workshop’s steel frame has been fully erected and signed off by the installation team.

Progress in Pictures

New office space
  • Level 1 Office Space: Final M&E containment, including air handling units (AHU) and ductwork, has been installed. Measures are in place to manage water ingress via the window opening to prevent further rainwater intrusion.
  • Kitchen works underway
  • Level 1 Kitchenette: M&E containment works have been completed, bringing this space closer to it's final finish.
  • Workshop Steel Frame: The full structure is now standing and ready for the next phase.
  • This investment in Fort Road marks a major step forward in providing high-quality, purpose-built facilities for our engineering teams and wider organisation. It reflects our commitment to creating safer, more efficient, and future-ready working environments.
