Service supporting Stoptober

Date

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service is encouraging people to take up the Stoptober challenge.

This October, join the thousands of smokers committing to quitting. Stop smoking for 28 days and you're 5 times more likely to give up for good.

It's much easier to stop smoking when you get the right support and there are lots of options to choose from.

Fire safety

Smoking related fires are the biggest killers in accidental home fires in the UK.

Tobacco is made to burn at more than 700 degrees C and can keep burning on its own.

If you aren't ready to give up, please take precautions if you smoke at home:
• No smoking in bed: It's easy to fall asleep with a lit cigarette and start a fire.
• Be careful when tired: You might doze off and accidentally drop your cigarette.
• Fully extinguish cigarettes: Always make sure it's completely out.
• Install a smoke alarm: Check it every week. It can alert you early if there's a fire.
• Use sturdy ashtrays: Pick ones that won't tip or catch fire.
• Think about safety: Buy lighters and matches that are hard for kids to use.

Businesses

Businesses should have up to date risk assessments. Guidance can be found here: https://www.esfrs.org/fire-risk-assessments

Owners should also be aware of smoke-free legislation.

Visit Britain has the following advice:

• Smoking is banned in enclosed public spaces and places of work, with some exemptions.
• There is a legal duty for you to display a legible no-smoking sign where it can be seen by customers and staff.
• There is a legal duty for any person who owns or manages smoke-free premises to ensure that guests, visitors and staff do not smoke on the premises.
