Supporting Sussex Safer Roads Partnership and the RoadPeace challenge

Date

On Monday 13 May, East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service supported Sussex Safer Roads Partnership (SSRP) taking part in the RoadPeace Challenge.

This year RoadPeace have called on Road Safety Partnerships to support the concept of collectively walking, running, cycling or horse riding 1,766 miles during the week of action (May 13-19, 2024). The challenge honours the 1,766 people reported killed on UK roads in 2022, with 44 individuals sadly losing their lives in Sussex in the last year.

Colleagues from East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, Brighton and Hove City Council, South East Coast Ambulance Service, Sussex Police, and West Sussex County Council collectively walked over 200 miles from two locations. Partners met at the Peace Statue in Hove for a minute’s silence to remember the victims of road traffic collisions and an opportunity to engage with members of the public around road safety.

Four members of staff from East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service walked a combined total of 45 miles. The crew from Hove White Watch also attended the Peace Statue, with a fire engine, in support of this important cause to make a united stand against road death and injury.

Community Safety Partnership & Engagement Manager, Susan Taylor said, “The RoadPeace challenge brings together services and communities, highlighting and amplifying the impact that road traffic collisions can have.  This challenge has not only allowed us to strengthen our community connections and demonstrate our dedication to road safety, but it enables us to encourage people to spread the word in the collective effort to reduce road fatalities and injuries, honouring those who have sadly lost their lives”.

RoadPeace have announced they reached their 1,766-mile target in just two days! They are encouraging people to keep logging their miles to see how many collective miles we can cover in support of this worthy cause.
